JDL offers solutions to the problems of Digital High Schools in three areas:

  1. Support for network planners
  2. An analysis of installed networks
  3. Training for teachers, technology coordinators and administrators

Support for Network Planners

The objective of these services is to provide support to district and school personnel charged with planning and installing networks to insure that they work effectively. Schools in California are in one of two stages: 1) planning for the installation networking; or, 2) working to maintain, support and troubleshoot a network that is already installed. Services can be supplied to educators in each of these two stages to help assure stable, reliable networks.

Services include:

  1. One and one-half to two days on-site and 2 days off-site
  2. Staff training in IEEE and OSI standards and requirements in simple terms
  3. A presentation of three to four design options that can accommodate high bandwidth for ten to twenty years
  4. Open discussion of desires for the network including definition of wants and needs of staff and students
  5. Comparison of current planning and design ideas to standards, requirements and twenty year network infrastructure potential
  6. Review of school technology plan and analysis of potential of contemplated network design to achieve the goals of the plan
  7. Assist in completing final design
  8. Develop a comprehensive network design document including network certification specifications and requirements
  9. Develop complete list of network components required to implement the design

An Analysis of Installed Networks

A LAN/WAN Analysis service is proposed to evaluate how the school network is working and finds problems or potential problems. A LAN/WAN Analysis is a snap shot of the structure of the network and its operation. It develops a unified and coherent perspective on the entire network, bringing into focus all of the elements which contribute to the present network condition. It makes recommendations for changes in both the near term, to solve present problems, and in the long term, to serve future needs.

The network analysis services will combine on-site consultation and off-site data analysis to achieve the following objectives:

  • Discover whether viruses or other threats to the network stability are present.
  • Learn whether network services are being delivered to users as expected including speed, reliability and stability.
  • Receive report of local area network throughput, bottlenecks and possible solutions.
  • Receive report of wide area network (Internet) throughput, bottlenecks and possible solutions.
  • Receive a logical and physical map of the network for use in future troubleshooting efforts.
  • Receive an assessment of the upgrade-ability and expandability of the network based on the current infrastructure.
  • Review variety of network design options for revitalizing the network if required.
  • Learn what network management is and how it will help assure network reliability Review and approve suggestions for upgrading LAN and WAN equipment.

Network analysis service deliverables and cost summary

  1. 2 to 2.5 days on-site and 2 to 2.5 days off-site
  2. Review network documentation to determine original design
  3. Use instrumentation to:
  4. Create logical network map
  5. Develop WAN throughput analysis over time
  6. Develop LAN throughput analysis including peak load review
  7. Develop conflict report
  8. Assess network security plan against actual implemented security measures
  9. Produce an analysis that guides the school in resolving network problems including a thorough recommendation of follow-up services required

Training

Training for school technology coordinators

One of the most frustrating aspects of technology is attempting to make decisions without a complete understanding of the possibilities and ramifications. How does one ask for a network that will last for twenty years, providing enough bandwidth to do everything that is impossible to anticipate that far away? How does one person support a network in a school without having to get all the certifications that will teach us way more than we need to know? How can a person who also carries a teaching load also support the network and network users?

Workshop Title Course Description Logistics and Cost
Networking Fundamentals for Educators Learn to speak the language of networking, hold vendors and integrators accountable, get what you want and not what someone else says you have to settle for, administer the network server, learn to configure printers, know how to accommodate both Macs and PCs on the same network, learn how to make sure your network can be upgraded without breaking. Wireless LANs, wireless labs, and more…much more. Two days

Hands on…build a network in the class.

Executive Seminar for Administrators

This audience is administrators. Superintendents and other administrative personnel often find themselves resorting to taking the advice of the technology staff without personnel knowledge that the recommended course of action is prudent. Sometimes the technology staff has limited knowledge and experience and they suggest a course based on whether they understand and can support it themselves. But, that course of action may not be in the best interests of the school system. How does the administrator learn the options, maintain control of the process and assure that leadership stays with those appointed to lead by the board?

Workshop Title Course Description Logistics and Cost
Executive Seminar for Superintendent's Cabinet Level Administrators Administrators learn to speak the language of administrators in a non-threatening atmosphere. There is no jargon and the participants set the pace. How does an administrator maintain leadership of technology without being an expert in it? How to keep from being pushed into it. Feel like you are out in front. Learn the options and why one is better than another is. Learn how to hold IT accountable for doing the right thing over the expedient thing. Learn to motivate IT to support instruction.

Learn to ask for technology infusion efforts to focus on meeting state and district curriculum standards. Learn how to ask for and measure the level of accountability for the technology dollars invested.
